While I disagree with the author of the letter proposing a glass-enclosed downtown walkway regarding the potential of a new arena, I will admit freely that the alternative suggestion is also an excellent idea which would make downtown far more pleasant to visit in the coldest parts of winter.

I ultimately believe the City of Saskatoon should set a pro-growth agenda, one way or the other. This does not necessarily demand municipal investments. It could be as simple as not impeding the development of new private-sector investments.

I was thrilled that council unanimously agreed to allow the expansion of Great Western Brewery, and I am equally as optimistic concerning new condo developments in Broadway and Nutana.

If we conclude city council should primarily focus on the basic services a municipal government is expected to provide — roads, water, sewers, social services, etc. — I should hope, at the very least, we do not become a city of stagnancy which seeks to blockade private sector investment which would help our city grow at low cost for taxpayers.
