What will I learn?
You’ll have already completed classes in chemistry, physics and calculus, so you'll start with courses in fields such as fluid mechanics, applied probability and STEM communications. Then you’ll get to go deeper into areas such as data science, engineering materials and STEM multimedia.
What coursework do I need to complete before applying?
Students are expected to complete most of the 100- and 200-level courses related to the major before joining our program. Specifically, students should complete the mathematics (MTH 141, MTH 142, MTH 241, MTH 306), calculus-based physics with lab (PHY 107, PHY 108, PHY 158), and chemistry with lab (CHE 107, CHE 127) requirements.
There are several ways for students to complete these lower-division courses. Students can enroll in campus-based courses at UB or other academic institutions. Many relevant courses are offered online at UB during the winter and summer semesters. Several institutions also offer these courses online throughout the academic year. For example, students who complete SUNY Finger Lakes Community College'sAssociate of Science in Engineering Science online programcan transition seamlessly to our online Engineering Science BS via SUNY Seamless Transfer.
TheBS in Engineering Science program, hosted in the interdisciplinaryDepartment of Engineering Education, consists of six curricular elements:
- The Engineering Core courses provide an introduction to engineering and essential mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing knowledge/skills.
The Required Engineering Science Areasprovide the engineering foundation upon which students can build a program that meets their personal goals and objectives. - The Breadth Requirementis satisfied by completing courses (minimum of 12 credits total) that teach engineering scientists how to work effectively on interdisciplinary problems.
- The Depth Requirementsatisfied by completing four 300- or 400-level courses (minimum of 12 credits) within either a specific engineering discipline or an established interdisciplinary theme area.
- The Technical Elective Requirement is satisfied by completing two 300- or 400-level courses (minimum of 6 credits) within engineering and applied sciences and providesstudents further opportunity to specialize and tailor their education.
- The General Education Requirement(UB Curriculum) satisfies requirements common to all University at Buffalo programs that are not met by the other requirements of the Engineering Science curriculum.
Students who have earned a bachelor’s degree in another field and aim to complete asubsequent degreeat UB do not need to satisfyGeneral Education Requirement(UB Curriculum)requirements.Note that many of the breadth and UB Curriculumn requirements (ENG 105, List 1 and List 2 courses for thethematic and global pathways) are not available in an online format during the standard fall and spring semesters at UB.

Who will I learn from?
As an engineering science student, many of your classes will be taught by faculty from the Department of Engineering Education, where you’ll find professors who specialize in helping engineering students learn complex subjects.
Within this program, you’ll also take classes from engineering and science experts from different departments throughout the university.For example, some of your classes may be taught by faculty in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Physics, or Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. But regardless of who your teachers are, they’re here to help you achieve your goals.
What can I do with an Engineering Science degree?
As an engineering science graduate, you might work for a government agency, a private company, a research lab or in a university. Your career might include research, education, sales, communication or project management. Some of our students also go to graduate school before getting a job.
