Brookhaven College is a community college founded in 1978 and is one of seven independently accredited colleges of the Dallas County Community College District.

Academic Nursing Programs

Associate Degree Nursing (AAS) - Registered Nurse (RN)

Graduates of the Associate Degree Nursing RN program are eligible to sit for the National Council of Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). If successful in passing the NCLEX-RN exam, graduates are able to apply for state licensure as a Registered Nurse.

The Nursing program admits students into both the Fall and Spring semesters. The deadline to submit application criteria for admission to the Fall semester is the last working day of February. The Spring semester deadline for application submission is the last working day of September.

BSN Transfer Agreements

Brookhaven College School of Nursing has articulation agreements (known as CABNET) with the following schools for students who intend to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Nursing:

  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing
  • University of Houston
  • University of Texas Arlington
  • University of Texas Tech Lubbock

Dual Enrollment

The Dual Enrollment program allows current Brookhaven College School of Nursing students to be dual enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree program and the Brookhaven College Nursing program simultaneously. Partnerships have been formed with the following Universities:

  • Texas Women's University
  • University of Texas Arlington
  • University of Texas Tech Lubbock
  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing

Admission Selection Process (may not be all inclusive):

Admission to Brookhaven College School of Nursing starts with the completion of the admission packet including signed course substitutions. A mathematical formula is then used to compute the applicants score.

Currently, Brookhaven College School of Nursing is ONLY accepting applications from students with a Step 1 score of 27 admission points and higher (see below for information on Step 1 and Step 2). Step 1 calculated score is the sum of student's GPA+HESI A2 TM+ Critical Thinking Exam score+Course points.

After the admission deadline, all candidate scores for STEP 1 will be calculated. The applicants with the top scores will be identified and then the STEP 2 process begins. The student's final scores will be determined by the combination scores of STEP 1 and STEP 2.

Step 1:

  1. Minimum 2.75 GPA is accepted for four prerequisite courses in the nursing curriculum
  2. Minimum grade of "C" or better in every course including each prerequisite course
  3. Max 4 points for 4 prereq in the GPA including Comp I, Intro to Chem, A&P I, Developmental Psych
  4. One point each for Nursing Pathophysiology and Ethics
  5. Maximum 3 points each A&P II, Microbiology, and Pharmacology
  6. Minimum accepted score on the HESI A2 exam is 76 (maximum of 25 points)
  7. Critical Thinking Exam points (maximum of 15)
  8. Dosage Calculations Workshop offered through Continuing Education Division

Step 2

College of Nursing student applicants with the top 50 Step 1 scores for the Spring admission and the top 70 Step 1 scores for the Fall admission will be invited for an interview and asked to complete a professional writing sample. The professional writing sample is evaluated based on composition, grammar, spelling, content, and legibility.

The interview score and professional writing sample scores will be added to the Step 1 score (GPA + HESI A2 points + critical thinking exam points + course points) for a FINAL admission score of (GPA + HESI A2 points + critical thinking exam points + course points + interview points +professional writing sample points) for a maximum admission score of 70 points.

Brookhaven College/Texas Tech University HSC EL Paso Dual Enrollment Program Option

Brookhaven College students will be accepted into the Brookhaven College/Texas Tech University HSC El Paso Dual Enrollment program if they pass with a "C" or better in at least one of the Texas Tech HSC El Paso- RN-BSN online courses listed below AND the candidate meets all of the Brookhaven College of Nursing School minimum requirements as listed in Step 1 of the admission selection process:

GNUR 4311, Professional Practice and Role Development (Texas Tech HSC El Paso RN-BSN online course)

GNUR 4381, Issues and Trends in Nursing (Texas Tech HSC EL Paso RN-BASN online course).

What to know before students apply ...

A High School diploma or GED is required for admission to the Brookhaven College Nursing School program.

Applicants are required to take the Health Education Systems Inc. Admissions Assessment (HESI A2). Brookhaven College Library has copies of the HESI A2 study guide available.

Requirements (not all inclusive)

  1. Positive titer for the following immunizations: MMR, Varicella, and Hep B surface antibody
  2. Negative TB test
  3. Current tDAP, Meningitis and Flu shots
  4. Medical/Liability Coverage
  5. CPR certification from the Emergency Care and Safety Institute, American Red Cross, or American Heart Association at the Health Care Provider level
  6. Physical examination
  7. Social Security Number
  8. Drug screen/criminal background check (students with a positive criminal history must complete a declaratory order with the Texas State Board of Nursing)

Accreditation and Approval

The Associate Degree Nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Brookhaven College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Nursing program is approved by the Texas State Board of Nursing.
